We’re pleased to share that Michael Camilleri, MD, AGAF, will be taking over the AGA Research Foundation chair role beginning this month. He has recruited five members to be part of the 2022-2024 AGA Research Foundation Executive Board.

Michael Camilleri, MD, AGAF, is a former AGA president (2015), AGA Julius Friedenwald Medal (2021) recipient, AGA Distinguished Mentor Award (2012) recipient and has been involved in many AGA committees and publications, most recently having been chair-elect of the AGA Research Foundation. His areas of focus are gastroparesis, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, bile acid diarrhea, GI disorders in neurological diseases, and pharmacogenetics and novel pharmacotherapeutics.

Aline Charabaty, MD, AGAF

Aline Charabaty, MD, AGAF is the Assistant Clinical Director of the GI Division at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Clinical Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Center at Johns Hopkins-Sibley Memorial Hospital. Dr. Charabaty was recognized for her work for the IBD community in 2020 when she received the Excellence in Medicine Award. She has served as a member of the AGA Diversity Committee and is currently serving on the AGA Government Affairs Committee. 

Dr. Charabaty has numerous peer-reviewed publications and is an invited speaker at regional, national and international conferences. She is also actively involved in educational and advocacy activities and committees with national and international GI societies.

Eric Esrailian, MD, MPH, AGAF

Eric Esrailian, MD, MPH, AGAF, is a health sciences clinical professor of medicine at UCLA. Dr. Esrailian’s primary clinical interests include gastrointestinal endoscopy, inflammatory bowel diseases, gastrointestinal hemorrhage and functional gastrointestinal diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome. In addition to disease areas within gastroenterology and internal medicine, Dr. Esrailian has a particular interest in the development of biomedical innovations, value in health care, medical education, initiatives towards patient-centered care and connections between health and human rights. 

In 2020, he launched the UCLA Leaders of Tomorrow series to emphasize essential leadership skills through some of the most influential and successful leaders in our community. Dr. Esrailian was named the 43rd Annual Lester Breslow Distinguished Scholar and Lecturer by the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.

Robert A. Ganz, MD, MASGE

Robert A. Ganz, MD, MASGE

Robert A. Ganz, MD, is actively engaged in clinical research with specific interests in esophagus and stomach, gastroesophageal reflux diseases and Barrett’s Esophagus, and is widely acknowledged as a leading authority in these fields. Dr. Ganz has published over 100 articles, abstracts and book chapters about digestive diseases and has made innumerable presentations at national medical meetings. He has been named to the Best Doctors In America several times. Dr. Ganz is an avid inventor and holds 25 patents in the field of medicine, with several pending. 

Dr. Ganz is widely considered to be a pioneer of cutting-edge medical technology and has co-founded several medical device companies including BARRX Medical Inc., which is devoted to the treatment of Barrett’s esophagus and early-stage esophageal cancer. He was the first person in the world to perform balloon-based radiofrequency ablation of Barrett’s esophagus and was also on the team that implanted the first magnetic sphincter device (LINX) for the treatment of esophageal reflux.

Aja S. McCutchen, MD, has been in private practice throughout her career. Dr. McCutchen has been published in the Southern Medical Journal, the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the International Journal of Colorectal Disease. She is also a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. McCutchen has a special interest in women’s GI health and gastrointestinal neoplasms.

Michael L. Kochman, MD, AGAF, is the Wilmott Family Professor of Medicine and professor of medicine in surgery in the gastroenterology division at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kochman has received a number of awards including the Luigi Mastroianni Clinical Innovator and Special Recognition Patient Advocacy Awards from the Health System as well as the Sid Cohen, MD, and Donald Martin, MD, awards for the education of fellows and residents. 

Dr. Kochman has served many local and national societies in a variety of positions. In 2018, AGA recognized him as the ‘Distinguished Academic Clinician.’ 

He has served AGA on the Education Committee, the Public Affairs Committee, was chair of the Regulatory Workgroup and is past chair of the AGA Center for GI Innovation and Technology. Dr. Kochman is editor for Techniques in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
