Dr. Maria T. Abreu, AGA’s president-elect, is the latest GI drawing public attention to UnitedHealthcare’s (UHC) prior authorization plans.
In a new opinion article published in the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Dr. Abreu shares how UHC is playing policy games with the health and well-being of her IBD patients in South Florida, and tens of millions of other GI patients nationwide.
“For my patients affected by IBD, colonoscopies are the gold standard for diagnosis and determining whether a medication is working. Needing prior authorization will be a barrier to patients getting the timely care they need. The resources of our clinical practice will be diverted from caring for patients to instead inputting patient case data and faxing forms to please the insurance company.”
