Thanks to Dr. Rotonya Carr, chair of the AGA Government Affairs Committee and a member of the Equity Project Advisory Board, for representing the field of GI during an NIH listening session on achieving racial and ethnic equity in biomedical research. Dr. Carr spoke about key issues of concern to AGA such as cultural competency, community engagement, funding equity research, improving communication of health information to patients, standardization of data across sectors, categorization of populations and about her own experiences. She joined over 90 participants from various institutions and backgrounds who discussed racial and ethnic equity in the biosciences, opportunities, challenges and solutions.
This listening session was part of a series of sessions organized by UNITE to hear from stakeholders at all levels of the biomedical research community regarding structural racism within the NIH-supported and the greater scientific community. NIH’s UNITE initiative aims to establish an equitable and civil culture within the biomedical research enterprise and reduce barriers to racial equity in the biomedical research workforce.
