At AGA, we’re committed to supporting women in GI as a part of our mission to further gender equity in gastroenterology. To support these efforts, last weekend we hosted our first women’s workshop of the year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
This unique career and professional development event brought together women in all stages of their careers – residents, trainees and GIs in academia and private practice – to gather with their peers for socializing and networking.
On Friday, attendees braved snowy weather and reconnected with friends and colleagues in a relaxed environment during the networking reception. The social event was a great icebreaker event leading into Saturday’s full schedule of leadership and career development workshop sessions, which covered topics important to advancing women in the field of GI.
During the keynote session from Tai Dixon Darden, women received leadership coaching, which highlighted the importance of accessing and owning their superpower to be bold leaders who create effective change.
Throughout the rest of the day, regional women physician-leaders in GI facilitated sessions about:
- Learning how to negotiate
- Reaching full potential and being fully authentic
- Engaging in advocacy
- Understanding intellectual property and medical entrepreneurship
Sessions on financial planning and mastering ergonomics were also included on the agenda. These topics were selected by the Northeast’s course directors in response to issues women are currently encountering in today’s healthcare environment and led to open and engaging conversations.
Thank you to Course Directors Laurel Fisher, MD, Asma Khapra, MD, and Bahar Adeli, MD, for their efforts in planning and leading the weekend’s programming, and to everyone who participated in the weekend’s activities.
We look forward to providing #WomenInGI with more opportunities to cultivate personal and professional growth at one of our five remaining workshops across the country!
It may be cold and ❄️ here in Philly, but the conversations among these ladies of the @AmerGastroAssn are 🔥
