Infectious outbreaks related to duodenoscopes used for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are a cause of concern for the GI community. Over the past few years, technological innovations have become available to GI clinicians that are intended to enhance patient safety.

To help you better understand how these advances may impact your practice and your patients, the AGA Center for GI Innovation and Technology (CGIT) has launched a new educational series called Innovation in Duodenoscope Design. Three expert editorials are now available to you at scopeinnovation.gastro.org:

DUODENOSCOPE-RELATED INFECTIONS: WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF?

Adarsh Thaker, MD, reviews recent history of endoscopic-related infections and key causes of infection outbreaks.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF DUODENOSCOPE DESIGN THAT CONTRIBUTE TO INFECTIONS AND WHERE WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MITIGATING/PREVENTING INFECTIONSDUODENOSCOPE-RELATED INFECTIONS: WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF?

Christopher Chapman, MD, reviews new designs coming online including disposable end caps, protective end sheaths, and fully disposable, single-use duodenoscopes.

THE BENEFITS AND PITFALLS OF DUODENOSCOPES WITH INNOVATIVE DESIGNS AND WHEN UTILIZING SINGLE-USE DEVICES MAKE SENSEDUODENOSCOPE-RELATED INFECTIONS: WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF?

V. Raman Muthusamy, MD, MAS, AGAF, discusses four scenarios where single-use duodenoscopes may offer important advantages for minimizing endoscope-related infections.
