How do we support the ever-growing number of women who are in (or joining) gastroenterology?

Women in GI – and their growth – are key to the health, longevity and advancement of the specialty.

That’s why AGA is dedicated to furthering gender equity in gastroenterology and piloting a vision for the future that supports female leadership and career advancement.

One way we’re doing this is through our Women in GI regional workshops, which has been expanded to six unique locations across the country this year.

Last weekend, we hosted our second workshop of 2024 at the University of Chicago. Activities began at the Friday night reception, which included a gut-friendly cooking demonstration and opportunities to network and socialize.

On Saturday, women in GI across the Midwest joined for programming that offered guidance on topics most relevant to advancing and thriving in the specialty. More than 50 virtual and in-person attendees heard from a diverse group of women leaders, including Drs. Sonali Paul, Cassandra Fritz and Laura Raffals.

Session subjects included:

Additionally, local faculty led programming about topics that women in GI encounter daily outside of the profession, and in-person attendees even had the opportunity to participate in interactive ergonomic stretches.

From the beginning to the end, the weekend was filled with meaningful conversations and connection building that equipped attendees at all career stages – residents to full faculty – with tools to thrive in GI.

Thank you to the Midwest course directors, Drs. Sonia Kupfer, Pooja Singal, Nina Gupta and Antoinette Pusateri for their work in creating thoughtful programming for the weekend, and to everyone who participated in-person or online.

Stay tuned for more opportunities to develop your personal and professional growth or attend one of our four remaining workshops for the year.

Next up: Western regional workshop on April 27 at the University of California, Los Angeles.
