The AGA journals’ newest DEI commentary, A TEAM Approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, written by Drs. Renee Williams, Pascale M. White and Sophie Balzora on behalf of the Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists, defines what diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) looks like in the physician workplace. The article describes specific structural barriers to DEI efforts, and includes a framework for institutions seeking to improve their DEI efforts through their TEAM approach:

Target DEI metrics in the department or organization, and barriers to DEI

Establish DEI as a priority in faculty development

Acquire, sustain, and modify the resources to support DEI efforts

Measure progress in acquisition, retainment, and promotion
