AGA Fellows Program Criteria
The AGA Fellows program recognizes both the achievements of clinical practitioners and basic or clinical researchers. The review and selection process falls under the oversight of the AGA Fellowship Recognition Panel.

How to become an AGA Fellow
AGA Fellowships are awarded to members whose accomplishments and contributions demonstrate personal commitment to the field of gastroenterology. Please review the eligibility criteria below and consider applying when applications open in the spring.

AGA Fellowships are awarded to members whose accomplishments and contributions demonstrate personal commitment to the field of gastroenterology.
The deadline to apply was Friday, Aug. 30.
Criteria based on achievement in clinical practice: basic or clinical
- Candidate shall have current uninterrupted membership in the AGA for a minimum period of seven years. After AGAF designation is awarded, member must maintain continuous AGA membership. If membership is terminated at any time, the awarded AGAF designation can be revoked.
- Candidate shall be in clinical private or academic practice for at least seven years since completion of fellowship training.
- Candidate shall have graduated from an accredited academic institution.
- Candidate shall have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in his/her respective state, province or region, unless retired.
- Candidate must have and maintain certification by an appropriate subspecialty board, if applicable to the country of residence. Note: If a certificate is in a language other than English, a brief explanation in English must be provided.
- Candidate (U.S. and Canada only) shall have received a minimum of 30 AMA PRA Category 1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credits™ during the last calendar year. (Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2023).
- Candidate shall have demonstrated superior achievement in practice by meeting two or more of the following criteria:
- Leadership position in AGA, local GI society, or medical society.
- Recognized community service.
- Clinical faculty appointment in teaching hospital or academic medical center.
- Investigator/co-investigator for published clinical research.
- Leadership position in local hospital.
- Candidate shall provide letters of recommendation from two AGA Full or International members. Note: Letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically and must arrive by application deadline. Sponsoring letters should outline the candidate’s accomplishments in areas such as recognition for significant clinical practice, teaching, committee and leadership activities in local hospitals and professional societies and community service. If the supporting letter is in a language other than English, a complete translation into English must be provided.

- Curriculum vitae.
- Two letters of recommendation from AGA members.
- Board certifications, if relevant (please scan into one file).
Criteria based on achievement in research: basic or clinical
- Candidate shall have current uninterrupted membership in the AGA for a minimum period of seven years. After AGAF designation is awarded, member must maintain continuous AGA membership. If membership is terminated at any time, the awarded AGAF designation can be revoked.
- Candidate shall be in an academic position for at least seven years since completion of fellowship or post-doctoral training, or in an equivalent position that emphasizes research endeavors in industry or a research institute.
- Candidate will have reached the rank of Associate or Full Professor or its equivalent.
- Candidate shall have graduated from an accredited academic institution.
- Practicing physician candidate should have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in his/her respective, state, province or region.
- Practicing physician candidate must have and maintain certification by an appropriate applicable subspecialty board, if applicable to the country of residence. Note: If a certificate is in a language other than English, a brief explanation in English must be provided.
- Particular attention will be paid to the quality and impact of the candidate’s research contributions. The candidate should present evidence of a sustained basic, translational or clinical research program related to digestive diseases, documented by a current curriculum vitae and narrative description of past and current research accomplishments; any honors received for research accomplishments; or other evidence as appropriate to a specific candidate.
- Candidate shall provide letters of recommendation from two AGA Full or International members. Note: Letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically and must arrive by application deadline. Sponsoring letters should outline the candidate’s accomplishments in areas such as recognition for significant research activity, teaching, committee and leadership activities in local hospitals and professional societies. If the supporting letter is in a language other than English, a complete translation into English must be provided.

Fee
The application fee of $150 must accompany each application. This fee is non-refundable. The deadline to apply was Friday, Aug. 30.
