Mission statement and FOCI
The AGA Institute Council Immunology, Microbiology & Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Section (IMIBD) executes AGA’s strategic plan by providing an international forum to present and evaluate the most exciting and innovative research in the field. By providing a forum for debate, collaboration and an exchange of ideas, the IMIBD section helps define what is state-of-the-art care in IBD and pushes the boundaries of science in search of a cure. Established and emerging leaders collate this information to provide education and training to both the next generation of researchers as well as for providers caring for patients with IBD. This enhanced knowledge leads to improved practice and quality, ultimately showing the value of section through the work of its diverse members.

The section presently has identified 18 specific areas of active and current foci, which are:
- Clinical research in IBD
- Clinical management related to IBD
- Basic and translational research related to IBD
- Research topics include but are not limited to:
- Immunology
- Microbiome
- Epidemiology
- Cancer epidemiology
- Novel therapy (mouse models and human)
- Optimizing existing therapy
- Disease and therapy-related adverse events
