Mission statement and FOCI
The AGA Institute Council Gastrointestinal Oncology Section (GIONC) is dedicated to expanding and advancing the science and practice of gastroenterology primarily by providing educational leadership in topics central to the initiation, progression, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tract cancers via high quality programming in clinical, translational and basic science research. The foci of the section are divided under two broad, inter-related themes of organ systems and GI cancer biology.
Areas of focus
The section presently has identified 18 specific areas of active and current foci, which are:
Organ systems: biology, diagnosis and clinical therapeutics
- Esophageal and junctional neoplasms
- Gastric neoplasms
- Carcinoid and neuroendocrine neoplasms
- Liver and biliary cancers
- Pancreatic neoplasms
- Population health screening: GI cancer screening
- Cancer biomarkers
- Cancer prevention and chemoprevention
- Cancer genomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, proteomics and systems biology
- Cancer epidemiology
- Familial cancer syndromes and cancer genetics
- Tumor cell biology and microenvironment
- Translational and targeted therapies for GI cancers
- GI cancer research models
- Nutrition, obesity, metabolism and the microbiome in GI cancer
- Cancer stem cells and circulating tumor cells
- Molecular signaling pathways in GI cancers
- Inflammation and immune responses in GI cancers
