A message from AGA President Bishr Omary, MD, PhD

“I’m saddened to share with you all that our esteemed colleague Dennis Ahnen passed away this week after a long battle with cancer. Dennis has been a dedicated and engaged AGA member for almost 40 years and has touched many of us during his clinical and research career. He began his independent academic career at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1981, starting as an instructor then moving up the ranks to professor in the Divisions of Gastroenterology and Medical Oncology. I am glad we could recently celebrate Dennis as the recipient of the highly prestigious 2020 AGA William Beaumont Prize, which recognizes individuals who have made unique, outstanding contributions of major importance to the field of gastroenterology. Dennis was recognized for his seminal research into the pathobiology of colorectal cancer and its prevention. Perhaps more importantly, with this award AGA also recognized Dennis’s personal attributes of integrity, collegiality and commitment that have been inherent to his success as a leader in the AGA and more broadly in the GI community as a mentor, exemplary teacher, and physician who provided exemplary care for his patients. On behalf of the AGA Governing Board, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.”

Dr. Ahnen requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the AGA Research Foundation: www.gastro.org/Ahnen
