Best practices for using endoscopic lifting agents

Lifting agents should be selected based on resection method, predicted histology, local expertise, preferences, and cost.

A new clinical practice update (CPU) provides expert guidance on the selection and use of endoscopic lifting agents during endoscopic resection to create a cushion between pre-cancerous lesions and the muscularis propria, elevating lesions before removal. The update reviews agents currently available and offers practical tips for clinicians.

Key takeaway:

While the ideal agent would be readily available, inexpensive, pre-mixed, and offer a long-lasting submucosal cushion, no such solution currently exists. Clinicians should instead select injection fluids based on planned resection method, anticipated histology, expertise, preferences, and cost.

In the CPU, experts review available agents and offer guidance on injection techniques, types of saline solutions, and comparisons among lifting agents.

Watch as Drs. Tobias Zuchelli and Douglas Rex discuss updated guidance on endoscopic lifting agents.
