AGA is partnering with the Digestive Disease National Coalition and 16 other specialty physician and patient advocacy organizations to participate in a coordinated day of advocacy on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The goal of the event is to encourage federal legislators to address step therapy reform by cosponsoring the Safe Step Act (HR 2279/S 2546), bipartisan legislation that would provide guardrails during the step therapy process to protect patients’ access to care. The bill requires:

  • Insurers to implement a clear and transparent process for a patient or physician to request an exception to a step therapy protocol.
  • Group health plans to respond to an exemption request within 72 hours in all circumstances, and 24 hours if the patient’s life is at risk.

AGA encourages you and your colleagues to advocate for your patients by participating in this event virtually. Send your legislator an email through AGA’s online advocacy tool and connect with them via social media using #ReformStepTherapy on Nov. 13.
